Situated directly above Lancaster Gate Underground Station, the Royal Lancaster Hotel is an 18-storey, purpose-built modern tower, which is not exactly pretty from the outside but commands excellent views over Hyde Park and the London cityscape. The spacious drop-off area has a grand entrance with a crown-shaped feature above it and the large, “T-shaped” lobby is opulently appointed, with wood panelling, marble floors and patterned rugs. Recently rebuilt, it offers ample seating and adjoining shops. The 394 medium sized guestrooms are double-glazed and decorated in soothing pastel tones, complemented by comfortable American oak furniture. Rooms on the higher floors command the better views, but all are clean and impeccably maintained, as are the en suite marble bathrooms.
The hotel contains two outstanding restaurants: “Nipa”, a Thai venue, and “Island Restaurant & Bar,” a stylish, split-level space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Hyde Park and serving modern British specialities, such as South Coast scallops with tomato and ginger, and breast of Mallard with savoury bread pudding and greengage compôte. For traditional afternoon tea, light snacks and drinks, guests can also enjoy the comfort of the comfortable Lounge and Lounge Bar.
